In the island of Bali, the Day of Nyepi – which this year will fall on March 31st, is a much awaited holiday.

The fun however begins days before the actual Nyepi Day. The often-underpublicized Melasti ceremony, which will take place on March 27th and 28th, is a very special, exotic and mystical ceremony that will take place all over the island at temples near the sea. The one at the old Batu Bolong Temple, next door to the Hotel Tugu Bali on Canggu Beach, is home of one of the biggest ones in the island, where hundreds of devotees came in parades of trucks, carrying the houses of their Gods from different corners of the island, as well as other sacred objects that need to be purified before the Nyepi Day comes.

It is two whole day-long ceremony that involve old Balinese dances and music, the appearance of mysterious and spiritual objects and ancient rituals. Getting in trance is common for the Balinese during the Melasti, and as beautiful prayers are chanted by the priests, we are reminded once again why there is no island more special than Bali in our eyes. If you can be in Bali during these times, it is a must to visit and experience. Our Hotel Tugu Bali family will be very happy to arrange a visit when you are in the island.

On the famous Balinese Day of Silence, the Nyepi Day this March, Bali is standing still for one day and one night. At the Tugu hideways in Bali or Lombok, watch the sun rising and setting over the ocean from your bedroom window and experience a day of complete serenity and tranquility. Dip into your private pool or rejunevate in your sumptuous outdoor bath and listen to the heavenly voices of the tropical birds surrounding you.
