My Journey

Bataviasche Kunstkring, one of the most beautiful historical buildings in Jakarta, now managed by Tugu Hotels & Restaurants Group who is known for bringing back to life the beautiful art, culture and history of the archipelago. The grand building has been decorated and returned to its original splendor, titled as TUGU KUNSTKRING PALEIS, an oasis of art & culture and culinary delights, exactly 101 years after its first opening in the Dutch Colonial Times.
From 2013 onwards, this legendary building is a proud center of art exhibitions, as well as other events with high appreciation to the beauty of arts and history. It will also house a gallery where guests can buy beautiful artworks, jewels, lifestyle products and other design items, a fine restaurant, a grand elegant lounge as well as a tea house.
To stay true to Kunstkring’s original mission, Tuguhotels & Tugu Dining Jakarta show their continuous support to this commitment, in working together with various artists. One of them is Melanie DR Hadarwati , who has an interesting characters, focused and a strong message she wants to communicate.

Melanie DR Hadarwati was born in Jakarta in May 1962, the youngest of seven children in family. Her parents were originally from Surakarta, Central Java. She attended junior and senior schools in Jakarta. At an early age she showed a talent for art, but this talent was not developed until much later in my life.
Apart from her academic achievements, her passions during school years were sport and dancing. After completing High School she joined an International Dance School in Jakarta, where she became proficient in Latin American and Ballroom dancing, and competed in a number of competitions in Indonesia and overseas. She achieved success on a number of occasions in South East Asian Latin American and Ballroom dancing competitions.

After retiring from competitive dancing in the late 80’s, she gained a diploma from A.S.M.I., and focussed on the growing hospitality industry in Indonesia and Jakarta in particular. She worked for a number of years with Hyatt at their two hotels in Jakarta in a managerial capicity. Afterwards she had a management role with ESMOD, an international Fashion School which had established itself for the first time in Jakarta. A number of years later she joined with the management at an international business club.
She is a self taught artist, having received no formal tuition or development of her artistic skills. Her paintings represent her raw artistic passion and she expresses this in an abstact form.
