Return to the Romance of Old Bali

An evening inspired by the celebrated life of Walter Spies in Bali in 1930s
Tucked by the surf and sunset beach of Canggu is one address to visit for a most authentic old Bali experience – a little hidden gem called Hotel Tugu Bali, awarded as one of the most unique places in the world and frequently mentioned as ‘a sampling of paradise’.

This New Year’s Eve, our celebration is inspired by the life of the charismatic artist Walter Spies in Bali. The legendary Walter Spies arrived in Central Java in the early 1920s and then lived in Bali till the end of 1930s. Spies was one of the biggest art heroes in Bali, and gave a great contribution to the Balinese art.

His life was forever surrounded by arts: paintings, music, cinema and dance. His house in Bali was an established stop on the circuit of well-known figures as Charlie Chaplin, anthropologist Margaret Mead, Mexican artist and caricaturist Miguel Covarrubias and many more passed through as guests.

For The New Year Eve 1930’s party, find yourself transported to the romantic art deco era of Bali in the early 20th century and celebrate like the 1930s artists. Walter Spies’ choreography of the celebrated Kecak dance that became the trademark of Bali will be performed as well as other old dances of Bali 1930s, followed by the 1920s and 1930s swing jazz tunes of Marlene Dietrich, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong

The night will begin with a short Balinese blessing, followed by a 1930s celebration in style. Lavish 5 course dinner, welcome cocktail and dances till countdown…
