It’s strange that Indonesia, with its embarrassment of 17,000 islands, has only a few tourism hotspots. Bali and Borneo might spring to mind, and maybe the ancient ruins of Borobudur, or Jakarta for a stopover.
Travelling beyond these main hubs was once an assault course of crowded ferries, rickety buses, duct-taped airplanes and electricity-rationed beach shacks.
