Born in 1976 in Ubud, Bali, I Made Arya Palguna first learned painting under his father, I Ketut Sudana, a well-known painter in his own right. He received his Bachelors degree from ISI Yogyakarta in 1996, and he has settled in Yogyakarta since with his wife and children. A versatile artist, his distinctive style appears in his paintings, sculptures and other three-dimensional objects, and art installations, even performance art and murals. He has exhibited extensively in Indonesia and abroad. Palguna has received many commissions (for murals and performance art works) and has been invited to various workshops, fellowships, and residency programs, most recently at Muong’s Cultural Museum, Vietnam (2012). He is a two-time finalist of the Philip Morris Art Awards (2011, 2012) and finalist at the Indofood Art Awards (2002).
“Art is an integral part of my daily life. For me, art has the power to heal, a sort of self therapy. Over the years, I have constantly involved myself whole-heartedly in a number of intriguing and thought-provoking art projects, and it is these valuable experiences that give me a better understanding of social and cultural issues evolving around me. When I create a new artwork, inspiration and fresh ideas flow effortlessly through me as they are blended with memories, experiences, values and a heavy dose of cultural conditioning that has washed over me since birth,” says the artist.
The All That You Cannot Leave Behind exhibition is open to the public from 1-14 September 2013 at Tugu Kunstkring Paleis.
As an oasis of art, culture and culinary delights, it is certain that from now on Tugu Kunstkring Paleis will be on everyone’s lips.
