From the lush volcanic north to the dreamy white sands of the south, the best hotels in Lombok offer an idyllic escape from neighbouring Bali, its crowds and bumper-to-bumper traffic. The island’s beaches and rice paddies are pristine, still untouched by mass tourism. Unsurprisingly then, as Bali becomes overdeveloped, more visitors are turning to Lombok as an alternative. With that comes an increasing number of boutique hotel and restaurant openings. Kuta and the south coast are flourishing, with much of the area being developed into upscale villas and eateries. Still, Lombok has managed to maintain its laid-back atmosphere and slow pace of life. Although it’s still far from being a “second Bali” (I don’t think it ever will be), it will inevitably get busier over the years. I’d encourage anyone to visit now to experience a slice of paradise before the crowds swell.

How we choose the best hotels in Lombok

ACCORDIONITEMCONTAINERBUTTON
Every hotel on this list has been selected independently by our editors and written by a Condé Nast Traveller journalist who knows the destination and has stayed at that property. When choosing hotels, our editors consider both luxury properties and boutique and lesser-known boltholes that offer an authentic and insider experience of a destination. We’re always looking for beautiful design, a great location and warm service – as well as serious sustainability credentials. We update this list regularly as new hotels open and existing ones evolve. Find out more about our editorial standards and how we review hotels.

Tugu

As soon as you step into the 100-year-old carved wooden lobby, you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’ve stepped into a museum or art gallery thanks to its cornucopia of Indonesian antiques and sculptures. The various accommodation options continue the theme – from garden bungalows to beachfront villas, each room is painted in vivid shades of olive and russet and adorned with artwork and ornate furniture. Some feature private pools, charming little oases enclosed by tropical plants and bright blooms. Even the most basic rooms emanate a five-star feel with hand-hewn furniture and oversized copper tubs in outdoor bathrooms. There are two dining options (you can also choose to eat at any romantic spot on the grounds) and a traditional hut housing a rather sultry bar decked out with oil lamps, mood lighting and plenty of soft furnishings. Outdoor activities are abundant – play on the white sands of Sire Beach, take day trips to nearby waterfalls or tee off at the next-door 18-hole golf course. Staying in? Take a yoga class, get pampered at the spa, or learn to make jamu, a traditional Indonesian health elixir. If you’re happy to splash out on a seaside villa, 107 is the most private. There are only slight differences between them; 205 has the biggest garden and a four-poster with massive Corinthian columns.
