Reog Ponorogo
Hailed from the border between East and Central Java, this wildly festive and colourful ancient performance is the kind of dance drama that demonstrates physical strength and extravagant lion-peafowl mask and costumes.
Traditionally performed in a trance state. Reog tells the story of a mythical battle between the King of Ponorogo and the magical lion-like creature called Singa Barong – a large mask usually made of tiger’s or leopard’s head skin, upon the mask attached a large fan adorned with peafowl feathers. The Singa Barong mask was notoriously heavy, the dancer of Singo Barong bear the mask about 30 – 40 kg weight and supported by the strength of their teeth.
At Tugu we describe it as Java’s answer to the Rio’s carnival and Bali’s Ogoh-ogoh.
Festive Foolery and Frivolous Fun, Tugu Style
To top it all off, the evening wouldn’t be complete without a Lavish Gala Dinner, Bonfire on the Beach and soundtrack to match the excesses and jubilant partying of the Tugu Bali crowd, so expect an eclectic mix of sounds by our fabulous live band.
