The Legend of Apsara

the legend of apsara

The Apsara Residence and Spa is dedicated to honor King Jayawarman II and also King Suryawarman II of the Khmer Empire (1113-1150 AD) in Cambodia.

Jayawarman II was a young prince who came from or once lived in Java and built a powerful kingdom in Champa at the end of the 8th century. He ruled the kingdom for 48 years. During that period of time, the region, presently known as Cambodia, was still in the form of small, separate kingdoms.

Suryawarman II built the largest religious monument in the world, Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, at the beginning of the 12th century, adorning its walls with the carvings of 2000 Apsara dancers. It is believed that these dancers were splashes of holy water when the gods and demons churn the ocean to obtain Amrita, the Elixir of Immortality. The Apsaras that grace the temple’s walls were meant to be the dancers for the gods, kings and heroes.

Apsara Residence and Spa

Anhar Setjadibrata, the founder of Tugu Hotels, Exotic Spas and Restaurants, through the creation of Apsara Residence and Spa at Hotel Tugu Malang, strives to remind people about the sentimental stories of romance and friendship between Indonesia and Cambodia in the past.

The masterpiece 200-square-meter Apsara Residence features a royal entrance, an antique canopy with a large outdoor tub, a spacious sleeping suite with a beautiul antique artisan-carved bed of 3.5-meter-wide, a romantic dining area, as well as a private spa called ‘Hall of Dancers’.

Apsara Spa is an oasis of peace, secluded from the outer world. The sophisticated treatments at the Spa were greatly inspired by the serene, ethereal beauty of Apsara dancers and their graceful performances. One of Apsara Spa’s signature treatments is an indulging massage that combines the dance peformed by the Apsaras (Yin) and a stronger deep tissue massage (Yang) from ancient Java.

Long before spa was introduced, ancient Javanese traditions always incorporated the aromatherapy in the forms of flowers and incense to stimulate the soul and to relax the muscles and the mind. Historically, aromatherapy could only be performed exclusively on the royal families. Apsara Spa’s ‘Day Dream in Angkor’ is an indulging 4-hour couple treatment that uses secret recipes containing natural herbs, traditional spices and exotic local flowers. The treatment begins with a 15-minute relaxing foot and hand wash and practising deep breaths to calm the mind, followed by a 2-hour head, facial and body aromatherapy massages.
