The Legend of Naga Mesem, Vessel of the Sea King

the legend of naga mesem - vessel of the sea king

5. Lombok (blog)s

Lombok is an island with a romantic past. A long time ago, the tip of Mount Rinjani was believed to be Kayangan, the Heavens where Batara Guru, the Chief of Gods and the beautiful goddesses resided. The sea in front of the coast of Sire (where Tugu Lombok is now located) was where the dragons lived, under the reign of the powerful Sea Dragon and his handsome son.

One full moon, the beautiful goddesses came down from Mount Rinjani to the coast to pay tribute to the ancient Hindu temples and to bathe in the natural water source by Sire Beach. Intending to bathe at the same time, the handsome son of the Sea Dragon spotted the most enchanting of the goddesses and they fell hopelessly in love at first sight and the goddess decided to stay with the Prince.

When the goddesses returned to Rinjani Peak, the chief of all gods became upset and tried desperately to get the goddess to return by sending charms of sparkly sunlight rays and beautiful songs to the goddess. The songs awakened the Sea Dragon King who was worried the goddess might be captivated by the beautiful sunrises and music and leave his son. He asked the help of the Mahasobya gods to send the Sun God away but he refused to depart and in the end a compromise was made. Every day the citizens of the Sea King should appear on the Beach of Sire to tell stories of happiness and love throughout the life-long marriage between the Prince and the goddess and the Sun God would deliver them back to Batara Guru.
