Indonesian Hospitality
An extract from a recent guest’s comment: At Tugu they don’t advertise “international standard of service”. They are guided only by one prerequisite when recruiting their staff: candidates must have the truest, most honest, sincerest soul of Indonesia. “What’s that?” One may ask. It’s not easy to describe indeed. It’s in that heartwarming smile of every single one of the Tugu staff, which is spontaneous and is in no way taught. It’s something that we feel every time we leave and come back to the hotel, welcomed and bid farewell by ten people.
It’s in that bag of mangoes this young waiter brought us from his own family garden. Or when our child cries when her toy goes missing, it’s that gardener who scoop her up and comfort her, shushing her by showing how the in-house florist is making Balinese offerings. It’s the quiet, sweet humbleness that the housekeeping boys withdraw from our bedroom, the few times we managed to catch them cleaning (most of the times, however, our rooms just turn magically clean and tidy, no matter how many times we leave our room and come back).
It’s the hours and hours they spend all day making beautiful heavenly flower arrangements, as if time doesn’t mean a thing and we are in another era of time. It’s the silly chuckles and jokes they tell each other in passing each other in Tugu’s narrow alleyways.
It is the way life is in the Tugu paradise, where true Indonesian hospitality is always thick in the air.
